The division between art and science, math and magic, is, after all, a recent separation rather than a fundamental one. Medieval alchemists may have been looking for a way to turn lead into gold, but what they were doing would look to a contemporary scientist a lot like basic (though occasionally volatile and often toxic) chemistry. Philosophers and historians are still trying to untangle man and myth, math and religion, in the life, work, and legacy of Pythagoras and his followers.
Après tout, la séparation entre l’art et la science, les mathématiques et la magie, en est une davantage récente que fondamentale. Les alchimistes du Moyen-Âge cherchaient peut-être comment transformer le plomb en or, mais ce qu’ils faisaient s’apparenterait beaucoup, pour un scientifique contemporain, à de la chimie élémentaire (quoiqu’occasionnellement volatile et souvent toxique). Dans la vie, l’œuvre et l’héritage de Pythagore et de ses disciples, les philosophes et historiens tentent encore de démêler l’humain du mythe, et les mathématiques de la religion.
